Squid Lunch on Seafood Island

Squid Lunch on Seafood Island

As you probably already know, Taiwan is an island.  So it is not at all surprising that seafood is as common as any other food here.  For example, here’s what I had for lunch at the food court of a mall called New Century (大統新世紀) yesterday:

Squid Combo at New Century

It was a combo meal (for about $5.00 US Dollars) that included:

  • Squid
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots and Corn
  • Tofu slices
  • Bean sprouts
  • A fried egg (the plate it came on was the type you find fajitas on when you’re in a Mexican restaurant)
  • Miso Soup
  • Bowl of Rice (which I ignored since I was trying to keep it more paleo)

I thought it was pretty good-tasting but I was told by my family that this was only food court quality food, and if I had it at some other places it would be way better.

Today, I took a stroll in a grocery store called Carrefour, and I came across the seafood section.  There is a wide selection compared to your regular grocery store in the States.  Keep in mind, this one that I visited wasn’t some seafood grocery store, it was just a common grocery store.
Some seafood items I saw:

  • Small clams
  • Big clams
  • Cuttlefish
  • Squid (Multiple types)
  • Small Octopus
  • Octopus legs
  • Oysters
  • Shrimp
  • All sorts of fish, including salmon, tuna, and all that jazz.

I guess the main thing about the fact that there’s so much seafood here is that not only is it easily accessible but it is also fresh!

Wait a minute, are you in Kaohsiung? My husband's home is in Kaohsiung and we go back every year. And we've been to this mall many times! :D Thank you so much for mentioning my squid with miso vinaigrette recipe!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm actually in Atlanta, Georgia now. But I'm originally from Kaohsiung and I visit about every year (skipped a few here and there) that's cool to find someone that's been there before! Thanks for your recipe!
