King Oyster Mushrooms Stir Fry with Basil is an easy way to make king oyster mushrooms that’s also delicious! I love using fresh Thai Basil from my garden to make this dish extra fresh.

What are King Oyster Mushrooms?

King Oyster Mushrooms are large mushrooms from the oyster mushroom family – it is white, smooth, and have an elongated stem. These shrooms are very firm, some folks even describe it as ‘crunchy’.

You can buy king oyster mushrooms in your local Asian super market. Often times you can also find it in organic or natural grocery stores such as Whole Foods.

If all else fails, you can try growing your own! You can find King oyster mushrooms growing kits on Amazon, for example!

What do King Oyster Mushrooms taste like?

Taste wise, the king oyster mushroom is earthy, woodsy, and savory. Some will say it is of the ‘umami’ taste.

The most notable thing to me is not the taste however, but that this thick fleshed mushroom is very firm when cooked, almost chewy in a way – which makes it a very uniquely tasting mushroom!

Are King Oyster Mushrooms good for you?

The short answer is yes! Like other mushrooms, King oyster mushrooms are a great source of fiber. It is also a good source of riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, potassium, copper, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Oyster mushrooms are great for heart health, blood sugar regulation, and also supports your immune system.

How do you cook King Oyster Mushrooms Stir Fry with Basil?

First gather your ingredients. You will need:

  • 2-3 King Oyster Mushrooms (~ 1/2 lb)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 3 cloves of garlic, smashed
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1 cup of fresh Thai basil
  • Salt, as desired

Slice king oyster mushrooms in to small pieces, either cubed or rectangular shaped.

In a wok or skillet, heat sesame oil on medium high heat, and add garlic. Stir fry for a minute.

Add the king oyster mushrooms and stir fry for a minute, and then add water, and cover the lid for about 1 minute.

Remove lid and continue to stir fry for about 3 more minutes or until the mushroom is cooked tender.

Add salt to taste, and fresh basil to the cooking pan.

Stir to mix well for about a minute, and the remove from heat and serve.
