Zhou Huan Hi 粥歡喜 - Comforting Congee in Kaohsiung

Published: Oct 9, 2025 by TinaTsai · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

When you're in Kaohsiung and craving something cozy, warm, and full of Taiwanese flavor, 粥歡喜 (Zhou Huan Hi) is the perfect stop.

Located in Nanzih District, this small but beloved restaurant has earned nearly perfect reviews (4.9⭐ from almost 400 diners!) - and for good reason.

The name itself is just so cute - "粥" (zhōu) means congee, and "歡喜" (huān xǐ) means joy or happiness. So together, 粥歡喜 literally translates to "Congee Happiness."

But there's another layer I love - when you say "Zhou Huan Hi" out loud, it actually sounds similar to "zo hua hi" in Taiwanese (Hokkien), which means "very happy." How perfect is that? Between the Mandarin meaning and the Taiwanese pronunciation, this spot basically radiates joy before you even take your first bite!

What We Ate

We ordered… a little bit of everything 😆

Mains: There were comforting bowls of congee and noodle soup, a spicy seafood pot, and glass noodles.

I personally got the Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶) - a popular pork rib soup with Hokkien origins, featuring pork ribs simmered in a flavorful broth of herbs and spices. It's commonly found in Malaysia and Singapore, but this version in Kaohsiung was especially delicious and full of depth.

And of course, there were sides! We tried Taiwanese sausages, some vegetable dishes, and a few cold appetizers like pickled cucumbers and kimchi.

Honestly, every single dish was flavorful and satisfying - the kind of homey, comforting food that makes you feel right at home even when you're traveling.

The Vibe

The restaurant has a clean, cozy setup - nothing fancy, just casual, relaxed, and welcoming. It's exactly the kind of no-frills spot that Kaohsiung does best.
Service is friendly, and portions are generous enough to satisfy without feeling heavy.

And the best part - I got to meet the owner! She was so warm and friendly, and we even took a picture together. You can really tell how much heart she puts into this place. 💛

Me and the owner!
