When Chris and I were in Kaohsiung for our pre-wedding photoshoot, one of our locations was the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (高雄市立美術館) and the surrounding Neiweipi Cultural Park (內惟埤文化園區).

Funny enough, we didn't actually go inside the museum to see any art. 😂
Instead, we spent our time outside around the huge lawns, trees, walking paths, sculptures, and green spaces surrounding the museum.
For this first look of our pre-wedding photoshoot, I wore a white wedding gown while Chris wore a dark three-piece suit and bow tie. Later that day, we changed into traditional Chinese wedding attire and took photos at the Confucius Temple near Lotus Pond.
The two locations gave us completely different looks, and I loved how green and relaxed the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts area felt.
Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and Neiweipi Cultural Park
The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, often shortened to KMFA, is located in Kaohsiung's Gushan District.
The museum sits within the much larger Neiweipi Cultural Park, so there is actually quite a bit to see outside even if you aren't planning to spend the day looking at museum exhibits.
The area has large lawns, mature trees, walking paths, sculptures, water, and plenty of open green space.
Honestly, when you're walking around some parts of the grounds, it feels more like a big city park than the grounds of an art museum.
And that is exactly why it worked so well for our photos!
Our Pre-Wedding Photoshoot
This was the first location of our pre-wedding photoshoot in Kaohsiung.
Most of our photos were taken around the lawns and trees, and I loved how simple the backgrounds were. There wasn't a ton going on behind us, so the dress and the two of us really stood out.
Our photography team also brought a long piece of sheer white fabric to use as a prop. For some of the photos, they stretched it across the grass or tossed it into the air to create those huge flowing shots.
It definitely required a little behind-the-scenes assistance. 😂 But I love how dramatic the pictures turned out!
We also took plenty of more traditional portraits around the park with the trees and greenery behind us.
The Red LOVE / 愛 Sculpture
One of the cutest photo spots we found was a giant red LOVE / 愛 sculpture sitting out on the lawn.
Obviously, when you're doing a pre-wedding photoshoot and there's a giant LOVE sign nearby, you have to take a picture with it. 😂
I actually love this one because it shows another side of the park. There are pieces of art incorporated throughout the outdoor spaces, so you don't necessarily have to walk into the museum itself to encounter art around here.
And the bright red 愛 made a pretty perfect background for wedding photos.
Outdoor Movie Concerts at the Museum
This also isn't the only reason I've spent time around the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.
One of my favorite things to do here is attend the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival's Grassland Concerts (草地音樂會).
These are outdoor movie concerts held on the lawn near the museum, and they are SO much fun.
A movie plays on a huge outdoor screen while a live symphony orchestra performs the film score along with it.
So instead of hearing the recorded movie soundtrack, you're sitting outside watching the film while an orchestra is playing the music live right in front of you.
We've actually been to two of these!
We saw Back to the Future, with the orchestra performing the movie score live, and more recently we watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl the same way.
It is such a cool experience, especially if you love movies and live music.
People settle onto the lawn for the evening, and the whole thing has a much more relaxed atmosphere than either a traditional symphony concert or going to a regular movie theater.
If you're visiting Kaohsiung during the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival, I would definitely look to see whether one of the Grassland Concerts is happening while you're there.
Is This a Good Photo Spot in Kaohsiung?
Based on our experience, yes!
I probably wouldn't have immediately thought of the grounds of an art museum when looking for pre-wedding photo locations, but there is so much open green space here.
We were able to get photos with large trees, grassy backgrounds, sculptures, and wide-open spaces without having to travel between a bunch of different locations.
I also liked that many of the backgrounds were relatively simple.
Some places in Kaohsiung are colorful and visually dramatic, which can be beautiful in photos. But here, the trees and lawns gave us a softer, more classic look.
That was especially nice for my white wedding dress.
Later that day, when we changed into our traditional Chinese wedding outfits at the Confucius Temple near Lotus Pond, we had colorful traditional architecture behind us instead.
The two locations look completely different, which gave us a lot of variety from one day of photos.
Visiting the Area
Full disclosure again: I still can't tell you much about the actual exhibits inside the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts because we didn't go inside during this visit. 😂
We were busy taking photos, changing outfits, and heading from one photography location to another.
But you definitely don't have to be visiting the museum itself to enjoy this area.
If you like parks, photography, public art, or simply want somewhere green to walk around in Kaohsiung, Neiweipi Cultural Park is worth checking out.
And if you're lucky enough to be visiting when one of the Grassland Concerts is happening, even better!
Final Thoughts
The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and Neiweipi Cultural Park ended up being such a pretty location for the first part of our Taiwan pre-wedding photoshoot.
The big lawns, trees, outdoor sculptures, and open space gave us a beautiful natural backdrop, and I especially loved getting a photo in front of the giant red LOVE / 愛 sculpture.
But some of my favorite memories from this area actually aren't from the photoshoot at all.
Watching movies like Back to the Future and Pirates of the Caribbean outside while a full symphony orchestra performs the soundtrack live is such a unique experience, and it's one of the reasons I always enjoy coming back to this part of Kaohsiung.
So even if you don't make it inside the museum, there is still plenty to experience outside. And apparently, it's a pretty great place for wedding photos too. 🥰
