How to make Chinese Broccoli with Sesame Soy Sauce (Step by Step)
First gather your ingredients:
- 1 lb chinese broccoli aka gai lan
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 3-5 cloves of garlic, minced or smashed
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 3 tablespoon soy sauce (or oyster sauce if you prefer)
Prepare the Chinese broccoli by rinsing it in water and then cutting off the ends of the stalk.

In a wok or large pot, add water and bring to a boil. Be sure not to put too much water as we will be adding the Chinese broccoli later. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and olive oil in the water and mix well.

In a large mixing bowl, add 1 teaspoon of salt, and garlic and place aside.

Once the water is boiling, add Chinese broccoli in to the boiling water, making sure to submerge all of it. We will want to cook it until tender and bright green which can take about 2-4 minutes, and then remove vegetable from heat and place in mixing bowl. With tongs or chopsticks, mix well with salt and garlic.

Remove Chinese broccoli and garlic, and place on a serving plate. Drizzle with sesame oil and then with soy sauce and serve!

Storage & Reheating
Store:
Let the Chinese broccoli cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days

- Microwave: Heat in short bursts (20-30 seconds), checking often so the veggies don't overcook.
