Chef Teng Restaurant in Kaohsiung: Taiwanese Comfort Food

Published: Mar 11, 2026 by Tina Tsai · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

While visiting Kaohsiung, we stopped by Chef Teng (鄧師傅功夫菜) for lunch and ended up having one of those meals that just feels incredibly comforting and satisfying. Chef Teng is a well-known Taiwanese restaurant brand founded in Kaohsiung and loved for its home-style Taiwanese dishes - the kind of food that reminds people of family meals and everyday comfort cooking.

What We Like to Order

Here are some dishes we like to order!

Pork Shank

The pork shank was incredibly tender, slow-cooked until the meat practically fell apart with a gentle pull of the chopsticks. The rich braising sauce soaked into the meat beautifully, making it savory and deeply satisfying.

Daikon Pork Soup

This soup was simple but incredibly comforting. The pork broth was light yet flavorful, and the daikon radish had absorbed the soup's richness while still keeping a soft, slightly sweet bite.

It's the kind of soup that feels nourishing and homey - something you could easily eat every day.

Chinese Eggplant

The eggplant dish was one of my favorites. The eggplant was perfectly soft and silky, soaking up all the savory sauce.

Taiwanese-style eggplant dishes often have that melt-in-your-mouth texture, and this one delivered exactly that.

Kung Pao Chicken

Chef Teng's Kung Pao chicken had great flavor balance - savory, slightly sweet, and a little bit spicy. The chicken was tender and coated in a glossy sauce with peanuts and peppers.

Bamboo with Mushrooms

This dish was simple but delicious - bamboo shoots stir-fried with mushrooms in a light sauce that really let the natural flavors shine.

Napa Cabbage with Glass Noodles

This was another comforting dish. The napa cabbage was tender and slightly sweet, while the glass noodles soaked up all the savory broth.

It's one of those humble dishes that quietly steals the show.

A Classic Taiwanese Family-Style Meal

One of the best things about Taiwanese restaurants like Chef Teng is the family-style dining. You order several dishes and share everything at the table, pairing it all with bowls of steamed white rice.

The mix of textures and flavors - braised meats, vegetables, soups, and stir-fries - makes every meal feel balanced and satisfying.

Why We Loved It

What stood out most about Chef Teng was how homey and comforting the food tasted. Nothing felt overly fancy or complicated - just well-made, classic Taiwanese dishes that highlight the ingredients.

Sometimes those are the meals that stay with you the most.
