I had actually eaten at Kanpeki Tonkatsu before and really enjoyed it, so when they reached out and invited us back to check out their lunch menu and newly updated dining space, I was excited to return.

And this time, we got to try A LOT of food!

From crispy katsu and Japanese curry to chicken karaage, croquettes, and more, we basically had the opportunity to sample our way through the lunch menu. And I have to say, I genuinely enjoyed all of it!

This post is in partnership with Kanpeki Tonkatsu. As always, all opinions are my own.

About Kanpeki Tonkatsu

Kanpeki Tonkatsu is a Japanese restaurant in Johns Creek specializing in tonkatsu and other Japanese comfort foods.

If you're not familiar with tonkatsu, it's a Japanese dish made with a breaded and deep-fried cutlet, traditionally pork. The coating gets wonderfully crispy while the meat inside stays juicy and tender.

Along with several types of katsu, the menu includes Japanese curry, rice bowls, fried chicken, croquettes, and other comforting dishes. I like that Kanpeki focuses on this style of Japanese food rather than trying to offer every type of Japanese dish imaginable.

The restaurant itself has a spacious, clean, and modern dining room with a casual, comfortable atmosphere. There's plenty of seating for lunch, dinner with family or friends, or larger groups. They recently added booth-style seating that provides a little more privacy while still keeping the space relaxed and welcoming.

Overall, Kanpeki Tonkatsu is a bright, easygoing restaurant that feels like a natural fit for its comforting menu.

Kanpeki Tonkatsu Lunch Menu

One of the main reasons we visited this time was to try Kanpeki Tonkatsu's lunch menu and we got to try pretty much all of it!

We tried the:

  • Minced Katsu Combo
  • Minced Katsu Curry
  • Potato Croquette Combo
  • Potato Croquette Curry
  • Chicken Karaage Combo
  • Chicken Karaage Curry
  • Tonjiru Combo

It was a great way to try several different styles of Japanese comfort food in one visit, from crispy fried dishes to curry and soup.

Menu items and prices can change, so I always recommend checking Kanpeki Tonkatsu's current menu before visiting.

What We Tried at Kanpeki Tonkatsu

We got to try a big portion of Kanpeki Tonkatsu's lunch menu during our visit, and everything was very tasty!

Here are the dishes we tried:

Chicken Karaage

Everything was delicious, but the Chicken Karaage was my favorite! We tried it both as the Chicken Karaage Combo and the Chicken Karaage Curry.

Karaage is Japanese-style fried chicken, and the pieces were crispy on the outside while staying juicy and tender inside.

The combo is great if you want to enjoy the karaage more on its own with rice and sides, while the curry version pairs the crispy chicken with warm, rich Japanese curry and rice.

I really enjoyed both versions - crispy fried chicken and Japanese curry is a pretty hard combination to beat!

Minced Katsu

We also tried both the Minced Katsu Combo and Minced Katsu Curry.

The minced katsu has a crispy breaded exterior with a savory, meaty filling inside. It's a little different from the traditional whole-cutlet style of tonkatsu, but still gives you that satisfying crispy outside and juicy center.

As with the karaage, you can go with the combo if you want the katsu with rice and sides, or choose the curry version for something warmer and saucier.

I especially liked the minced katsu paired with the Japanese curry.

Potato Croquette

Next up were the Potato Croquette Combo and Potato Croquette Curry.

The croquettes are crispy on the outside with a soft, creamy potato filling inside. They're another classic Japanese comfort food and a nice change of pace from the meatier katsu and karaage options.

We tried them both as a combo and with curry, and the crispy croquette paired especially nicely with the rich Japanese curry.

Tonjiru Combo

This one surprised me - it was so good! The Tonjiru Combo ended up being another favorite of mine.

Tonjiru is a comforting Japanese miso-based soup traditionally made with pork and vegetables. The soup was warm, savory, and full of flavor, making it a really satisfying option alongside the rice and sides.

After trying several of the crispy fried dishes, it was nice to have something warm and soupy in the mix too. If I had to choose another favorite from everything we tried, this would definitely be one of them.

Is Kanpeki Tonkatsu Worth Visiting?

If you like Japanese comfort food, I definitely think Kanpeki Tonkatsu is worth checking out!

I enjoyed it the first time I visited, and after coming back and getting to try so much more of the menu, I enjoyed it just as much.

The crispy katsu is obviously the star, but I also really liked having the different curry, karaage, and croquette options. And with several $10 lunch specials, it's a particularly good restaurant to keep in mind if you're looking for lunch in Johns Creek.

We'll definitely be back - though next time we probably don't need quite as much food on the table. 😂
