Cantonese BBQ

Cantonese BBQ

If you are a fan of Asian food, meat, and yummy food, and you haven’t tried Cantonese BBQ yet, go yelp up the closest one near you and take a visit!

Siu mei (燒味) is the name of Cantonese BBQ – and basically it’s meat roasted over an open fire. It’s usually coated in some delicious sauce so it is super flavorful. The sauce is different depending on the meat / dish.

Just don’t be super shocked to see the roasted animals hanging at the counter, that is the way they do it…

Here are some popular Cantonese BBQ dishes:

Char Siu (叉燒)

BBQ Pork – probably the most popular of the Cantonese BBQ, and is often also used in other dishes such as the Char siu buns in Dim Sum. It’s sweet and savory and is known for its distinctive red color.

Char Siu – Chinese BBQ Pork

Siu Aap (燒鴨)

Roasted duck! One of my favorites! It is marinated with five spice powder and honey mixture and has a crispy skin and tender inside.

Chinese Roast Duck

Siu Yuk (燒肉)

Another one of my favorites – this is roasted pork belly, with super crispy skin. It is maybe my favorite period.

Often times, Cantonese BBQ is also served alongside Lou Mei 滷水. It is basically meat that has been braised in a sauce. It’s also known as Lu Wei 滷味 in Taiwan.

Here’s some popular dishes often times sold with Cantonese BBQ:

Soy sauce chicken (豉油雞)

I think this might be my mom’s favorite – chicken cooked with soy sauce mix. It is very flavorful so… well, it’s also one of my favorites! (They’re all my favorites apparently lol)

Soy sauce chicken (豉油雞)

White cut chicken (白切雞)

Marinated steamed chicken. The chicken is salt marinated and then cooked in either hot water or chicken broth with ginger and sometimes other ingredients. Usually served with some tasty condiment called geung yung 薑蓉 which is made with ginger, garlic, green onions, salt and hot oil. Very tasty!

White Cut Chicken with Ginger Scallion Sauce

A few more that isn’t sold every where:

  • Orange cuttlefish (鹵水墨魚) – marinated cuttlefish
  • Lou sui aap yik (滷水鴨翼) – braised duck wings

I absolutely love Roast Pork, as it’s got a perfect mix of crunch and meatiness, but the Roast Duck is also so good.

What’s great is usually at Cantonese BBQ places you can get the 2 meat or 3 meat plate too. Then you can try various meats in one dish – and it will be served with rice and veggies.

The only complaint I sometimes have is if they put too much of the BBQ sauce on the meat, then it is too sweet or salty. But some people love that!

So what is your favorite dish to get at Cantonese BBQ??

Pin for later!
