Yi Ren Guan 異人館 – A Hidden Restaurant Inside Carrefour Kaohsiung

When you think of Carrefour, you probably picture grocery shopping or picking up daily essentials. But tucked inside Carrefour in Kaohsiung, you'll also find 異人館 (Yi Ren Guan) - a full-service restaurant serving hearty Taiwanese and Asian-style meals.

Instead of just quick food court snacks, Yi Ren Guan offers a sit-down dining experience that feels worlds away from the grocery aisles.

What is 異人館 (Yi Ren Guan)?

Yi Ren Guan is a long-running Taiwanese restaurant chain with a menu that blends familiar local flavors with a few Western-inspired touches. But make no mistake - most of the dishes lean very Asian, from rice and noodle plates to stir-fries and hot entrées. It's a go-to spot for families and groups looking for something affordable but satisfying after shopping.

Inside Carrefour

Finding a sit-down restaurant like this inside Carrefour feels unexpected, but in Taiwan it's actually pretty common for big retailers and department stores to include restaurants. The Kaohsiung location of Yi Ren Guan is casual, family-friendly, and always buzzing with shoppers grabbing a meal after running errands.

What We Ordered

I went with the 極品花雕雞鍋 (Huadiao Chicken Hot Pot). This one was bold and deeply flavorful - the chicken is lightly fried first to lock in juiciness, then braised with ginger, garlic, and chili in a rich sauce.

In case you didn't know - Huadiao wine is a type of aged Shaoxing rice wine (紹興酒) from Zhejiang Province, China. The name literally means "flower-carved wine" because the clay jars it's traditionally stored in were often engraved with floral designs.

This dish actually has a special connection for me. When my sister and my mom used to come to 異人館, my mom always ordered the 花雕雞鍋. So when I spotted it on the menu during this visit, I knew I had to order it too. Tasting it for myself - the tender chicken, the fragrant broth, and that unmistakable touch of Huadiao wine - made me feel nostalgic, almost like I was sharing the same meal my mom enjoyed years ago.

My sister ordered a Hot Pot dish (I can't remember which one but it was yum!) It came with fresh chicken pieces and a variety of vegetables. The staff brought it to the table and poured in the steaming broth, so it bubbled away right in front of us - simple, hearty, and very comforting.

Dessert Highlight: Nai Lao (奶酪) - Creamy Taiwanese Milk Pudding

One of my favorite surprises at 異人館 was actually the free dessert -you could just grab a cup of nai lao (奶酪), a traditional milk pudding, on your way out. It had that perfect balance of creamy and light, kind of like a cross between yogurt and custard. Sweet, silky, and wobbly in the best way, it was the ideal way to end the meal without feeling too heavy.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much since it was complimentary, but it turned out to be one of the highlights for me. Sometimes the simplest little touches really leave the biggest impression.

Sorry for this crappy picture but I promise it was so good!

I definitely took better videos than pictures... so here is my tiktok video if you want to check out HOW delicious it was:
