After a long day wandering around Kaohsiung, sometimes you don't want street food, snacks, or another fried thing… you just want something warm and comforting. That's exactly the mood Jhu Jian Happy Hot Pot 築間幸福鍋物 fits.

This is one of Taiwan's popular personal hot pot chains but honestly, it doesn't feel chain-y at all. It feels calm, clean, and cozy… almost like a modern café version of hot pot.
And yes - the name literally translates to "Happy Hot Pot." Very accurate.
Here's my TikTok video I made for it this tasty meal:
The Vibe
From the outside it looks sleek and modern - dark exterior, simple signage, but inside it's warm and relaxing.
Instead of the loud group-style hot pot places, this is individual hot pot. Everyone gets their own pot, their own ingredients, and cooks at their own pace.

How Ordering Works
You basically build your own set:
- Pick a broth
- Pick a meat or seafood
- A big vegetable + hot pot platter comes with it
- Cook everything yourself at the table
Very straightforward and beginner-friendly if you've never done hot pot before.
What We Ate
We went pretty all-in for our first meal in Taiwan 😆
We ordered a mix of beef and seafood for the hot pot - thin sliced beef, fresh shrimp, fish, and oysters - and then picked a couple different soup bases so we could switch flavors while cooking.
One broth was lighter and clean tasting, while the other was richer and creamier, which made it fun to rotate what we dipped where.
And honestly, half the fun here is the self-serve bar.
They had an all-you-can-eat section with tons of veggies (napa cabbage, leafy greens, mushrooms, onions, tofu, and more), plus noodles, sauces, drinks, and even ice cream at the end. You basically just keep grabbing ingredients and cooking at your own pace.

We also got a bowl of Taiwanese braised pork rice (滷肉飯), which was super comforting and exactly what you want alongside hot pot.

Overall it was one of those perfect first-night meals - cozy, interactive, and a great introduction back into Taiwan food mode.
Why Taiwanese Personal Hot Pot Is Great
Taiwan does solo hot pot really well.
It's perfect when:
- you're tired from walking all day
- traveling as a couple
- not hungry enough for a giant group feast
- or just want comfort food
Also the broths tend to be lighter and cleaner than American hot pot, so you don't feel like you need a nap immediately after.
