With over 30 years of history, this spacious, lush garden-style restaurant is beloved by families and large gatherings for its generous portions, easy parking, and relaxed mountain atmosphere.

They are known especially for the salt-baked chicken, hearty soups, and fresh mountain-vegetable stir-fries - all served in a cozy, home-style setting.

About the Name: 綠野山莊 (Luye Shanzhuang)

The name 綠野山莊 (Luye Shanzhuang) translates loosely to "Green Wild Mountain Lodge."

  • 綠野 (lǜyě) means green fields / wild greenery
  • 山莊 (shānzhuāng) means mountain lodge or mountain villa

It's a very Taiwanese-style name that evokes nature, countryside living, and a peaceful mountain retreat. Locals usually refer to the restaurant simply as 綠野山莊 Luye Shanzhuang, even though the full name is 綠野山莊花園餐廳.

The name really fits the experience - you're surrounded by plants, a big garden area, and that quiet mountain-edge atmosphere that makes it feel more like a getaway than just a restaurant stop.

Why You Should Visit

Luye Shanzhuang 綠野山莊 is one of those true Taiwanese countryside restaurants that most tourists never experience. It's tucked away near Guanyin Mountain, surrounded by greenery and mountain air - the kind of place locals know, but travelers rarely stumble upon.

If you're Taiwanese American, an overseas visitor, or just someone who loves exploring beyond the usual city spots, this is exactly the kind of Taiwan you don't want to miss:

  • big family-style dishes
  • beautiful mountain scenery
  • fresh local ingredients (like water bamboo!)
  • a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere
  • zero tourist crowds
  • and food that tastes like the Taiwan your parents or grandparents talk about

If you want a break from urban Kaohsiung and want to eat somewhere that feels like a countryside getaway, 綠野山莊 Luye Shanzhuang is worth the trip. Plus it's close to E-Da Mall so you can go shopping and burn off the calories afterwards lol

What to Order

Here are some dishes we tried that were especially good!

Salt-Baked Chicken (鹽焗雞)

This is their signature dish and does require an hour of roasting time (menu notes: 需烤一小時). The chicken comes hot, tender, and very flavorful from the salt-baking process. The skin is beautifully seasoned, and the meat stays juicy even though it's roasted for so long.

Honey Glazed Chicken (蜜汁雞)

This dish is a sweeter take on their chicken - coated in a glossy honey glaze that's savory, slightly sweet, and super flavorful. The chicken still has that firmer texture you get from 土雞 (free-range/native chicken), which makes it extra satisfying to eat. A great option if you want something a little different from the more savory dishes.

Pickled Chili Chicken Soup (剝皮辣椒雞)

Pickled Chili Chicken Soup 剝皮辣椒雞 is a Taiwanese favorite made with peeled green chili peppers that are pickled - giving it a mix of savory, sweet, and subtly spicy flavors. The broth is comforting and aromatic, perfect on a cooler mountain-side day.

By the way we make this at home sometimes! Here's the recipe if you're interested!

Crispy Fried River Shrimp (鹽酥溪蝦)

A crunchy, salty snack-style dish! These small river shrimp are fried until crispy and lightly seasoned. Great as a beer snack or as something to crunch on in between bites of heartier dishes.

Cod with Crispy Soybean Topping (豆酥扁鱈)

This dish features tender, flaky cod topped with a savory crispy soybean crumble (豆酥). The topping adds a slightly sweet, umami-rich crunch that pairs perfectly with the soft, delicate fish. It's a classic Taiwanese-style preparation that's simple but really satisfying.

Stir-Fried Bamboo Shoots (炒桂竹筍)

Tender, juicy bamboo shoots stir-fried in a light savory sauce. 桂竹筍 has a naturally sweet flavor, and they cook it just right so it still has that crisp bite without being tough.

Stir-Fried Water Bamboo with Fermented Black Beans (豆鼓炒野蓮)

This dish uses water bamboo - long, crunchy, hollow stems from the water snowflake plant, a vegetable you'll find all over Taiwan. It's stir-fried with garlic and fermented soybeans (a lighter brown version, not the black douchi you see in Cantonese cooking). The result is savory, aromatic, and a little earthy, while still letting the natural crispness of the water bamboo shine through. Simple, delicious, and a classic way to enjoy water bamboo in Taiwan.

Pumpkin Rice Noodles (金瓜炒米粉)

This was such a comforting dish. The rice noodles are stir-fried with pumpkin, which adds a natural sweetness and a soft, slightly creamy texture that coats the noodles. It's simple, homey, and really balances out the richer meat dishes on the table.

Don't Forget the Taiwan Beer 🍻

This is one of those meals that just calls for a cold Taiwan Beer. It pairs perfectly with everything - especially the crispy shrimp and all the savory dishes, and makes the whole experience feel even more local.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Luye Shanzhuang 綠野山莊 is one of those places that really sticks with you - not just because of the food, but because of the whole experience.

It's not fancy or trendy, and that's exactly what makes it special. You're coming here for big, comforting, home-style dishes, fresh mountain ingredients, and that relaxed countryside atmosphere you just don't get in the city.

Between the Range Chicken 土雞 dishes, the seasonal vegetables like water bamboo, and everything meant to be shared around the table, it feels like a true Taiwanese family-style meal.

And honestly, that's what I loved most about it - it feels authentic in a way that's getting harder to find.

If you're visiting Taiwan and want to experience something beyond night markets and city restaurants, this is definitely worth adding to your list.
