About Chicken Wings
Chicken wings are super popular in the states, and it's easy to see why! First of all, who doesn't like chicken? Second of all, chicken wings can be made with so many flavors (think buffalo, sweet chili, etc) and they're perfect as an appetizer or as an entrée!
But have you ever thought about why they are... so small? Think about it, chicken wings are very small compared to the size of the average chicken. The chicken breast and thighs can be so big! So where does chicken wings come from?
Chicken wings do actually come from, well, chicken wings. They're just super small because adult chickens rarely use them (they don't really fly).
Air Fryer Chicken Wings
There's many ways to air fry chicken wings, and today I'm going to show you how to use a chinese marinade to make them.
You will see that many recipes might vary on the heat they choose on the air fryer when making chicken wings. I personally like to air fry them at 400 degrees F. So how long to air fryer chicken wings at 400? About 18 minutes. 10 minutes the first round, and then flip the wings, and let it cook another 8 minutes.
When are chicken wings done? They're done when the internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
How to make Chinese Chicken Wings in Air Fryer?
- 1 lb chicken wings
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 1-2 green onion, chopped
In a large mixing bowl, add chicken, sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, honey, garlic powder, half of the chopped green onions, salt and pepper. Toss everything to mix well and coat the wings. You can also do this in a zip lock bag if you prefer.

Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes, or up to overnight.

Preheat air fryer to 400 F degrees. Then add the chicken wings to air fryer (try to spread them out so they are not touching).
If desired, pour any remaining marinade from the bowl over the raw wings before cooking. Do not use leftover marinade as a finishing sauce unless it has been boiled first.
Then let it air fry for about 10 minutes.

Take out the air fryer basket and shake it to flip over the wings. If you're not using a basket style air fryer, you can use tongs to flip over the chicken wings.
Then let it air fry another 8 minutes. Air fryer times may vary depending on wing size and model. Always check that the thickest part of the wing reaches 165°F, avoiding the bone.
Remove chicken from air fryer and sprinkle with rest of the chopped green onions. Serve!

Chinese Chicken Wings in Oven Version
If you do not have an air fryer or prefer to make this in the oven, here are instructions for that too:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the chicken wings, sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, honey, garlic powder, half of the chopped green onions, salt, and pepper. Toss everything together until the wings are well coated. You can also do this in a zip-top bag if you prefer.
- Marinate the wings in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes, or up to overnight.
- After the chicken has marinated, preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easier clean up. This step is optional, but recommended.
- Place the wings on the baking sheet in a single layer, making sure they are not overcrowded or overlapping. If desired, pour any remaining marinade from the bowl over the raw wings before baking.
- Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the wings are cooked through and the thickest part reaches at least 165°F. Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the wings.
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle with the remaining chopped green onions, and serve!
Chinese Chicken Wings on the Grill Version
If you do not have an air fryer or prefer to make this on a gas grill, here are instructions for that too:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the chicken wings, sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, honey, garlic powder, half of the chopped green onions, salt, and pepper. Toss everything together until the wings are well coated. You can also do this in a zip-top bag if you prefer.
- Marinate the wings in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes, or up to overnight.
- After the chicken has marinated, oil your grill grates and preheat the grill to medium heat, about 350°F.
- Place the wings on the preheated grill and cook for about 25 to 30 minutes, turning occasionally, until the wings are browned and cooked through. A meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the wing, avoiding the bone, should read at least 165°F.
- Remove from heat, sprinkle with the remaining chopped green onions, and serve!

Tina I tried this and the whole family loved them! Even the picky 9 year old! Thank you.
I'm going to try it with a Canadian twist and use maple syrup instead of honey to see what happens (we have extra maple syrup).

Do you have recipe using gas bbq
TinaTsai says
Hello there - you can cook it on the gas grill also - After you marinade the chicken, oil your grill racks, and heat your grill to medium heat about 350 degrees F. Cook on the preheated grill, turning occasionally, until chicken is browned and no longer pink, takes about 25 to 30 minutes. A meat thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165 degrees F.
