What you’ll love about this recipe

You can always order this on takeout, but here’s why I think you’ll love making this at home:

  1. Healthier – You can easily control the amount of oil and sodium that goes in to a dish when you cook it. Which is already way healthier than how much oil and sodium restaurants can use!
  2. Fresher Ingredients – Since you can purchase your own ingredients you can make sure they are all fresh and high quality!
  3. Cheaper – Speaking of purchasing ingredients… you will also save a lot more money buy making this at home than to buy it at a restaurant or paying more for delivery too.
  4. Customizations – OK, this is one of my favorite things about cooking at home. You can easily customize the recipe! Add extra veggies, or maybe extra meat, or adjust the spices to your liking! I’ll give you some ideas below.

Customization Ideas

Here are some ideas if you’d like to switch things up!

Make it spicy!

You can add some fresh or dried chilies to this dish to give it a kick. You can also drizzle some spicy chili crisps, hot sauce, or chili oil too!

Here are some of my favorites below. I bought them at my local Asian supermarket, but you can find other brands of it on Amazon (I’ve linked to them):

Add more veggies!

I love adding extra veggies to my dishes. Healthier the better – after all it’s where we get nutrients for our body! Some tasty veggies to add include bell peppers, snow peas, green beans. The only thing you want to know is if you add them, the cooking time may change.

You can also add various types of herbs too – I often will add fresh basil for example to my stir fries!

Mix up the sauces!

You can try changing up the sauces too if you’d like! You can try soy paste, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sweet soy sauce for different flavors!

You can also interchange honey vs brown sugar vs any other type of sweetener to see what is your favorite.

Or you can also add other spices such as cumin, black pepper, white pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, or whatever your heart may desire.

Dark Meat vs. White Meat

I usually cook my stir fries with dark meat (chicken thighs specifically) but for this dish I switched it up and cooked it with chicken breast! You can still do dark meat if you prefer – totally up to you.

Usually, you can use dark vs white meat interchangeably. But depending on the thickness of the chicken you may need to adjust the timing.

Basically – just make sure that the chicken is thoroughly cooked before serving!

If you’re curious about the differences between the two, here’s an article all about it.

How to cook Mongolian Chicken

  • 1 lb chicken breast, thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp rice wine
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 stalk of green onion, chopped and separated
  • Salt, to taste

Slice the chicken and the onions.

Then, combine cornstarch, rice wine, and chicken in a large bowl or zip lock bag. If you are about to cook it, let it marinade at the very least 15-30 minutes. If you are making this ahead, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes before cooking.

In a large nonstick skillet or wok, add 1 tbsp of oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and stir fry for about 2 minutes.

Add chicken and stir to spread evenly. Then add soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, brown sugar, minced garlic, and salt to taste. Stir fry everything together until the chicken is cooked thoroughly.

Sprinkle chopped green onions, and stir to combine.

Remove from heat and serve!
