Have you ever heard of Celtuce aka Wosun? We love to make this Chinese Celtuce Salad with it – it is incredibly tasty and refreshing! If you’ve never had this veggie or dish before, you’ve got to give it a try!

This dish basically features chunks of celtuce tossed with garlic, spring onions, red peppers, sesame oil dressing! It’s perfect as an appetizer or veggie side dish.

What is Celtuce

Celtuce is a vegetable and is also known as stem lettuce, celery lettuce, asparagus lettuce, and wosun 萵筍 in Mandarin Chinese. Unlike many vegetables where the focus is on the leaves, the focus on this vegetable for its giant stems. You can also eat the vegetable’s leaves also.

You can eat this vegetable raw or cooked. It can be pickled, grilled, stir fried, or prepared in a salad. Celtuce taste is is mild but in a way nutty, with a slight smoky aftertaste. I prefer it raw like in this recipe because it is so crunchy and refreshing.

Celtuce is low in calories, and is packed with vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin C, and B vitamins – making it a healthy vegetable!

How to make Chinese Celtuce Salad

First gather your ingredients

  • 3 celtuce
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 3 celtuce
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 2 dried red peppers, chopped
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp salt

First we are going to prepare the celtuce. With a knife, cut off the leafy top and the bottom of the vegetable (usually it is very dry). Using a vegetable peeler, peel off the touch skin.

With a knife, cut celtuce up in to chunks – I prefer diagonal chunks, but you don’t really have to do that.

Place the chunks of celtuce in a large bowl or plate, and add chopped garlic, scallions and dried red peppers on top.

In a cooking pan, heat up vegetable oil on high heat for a couple of minutes, as we want to make sure it is hot.

Pour the hot oil all over the garlic, scallions, dried red peppers on the celtuce (I love the sizzle!)

Add salt and combine/toss the salad and serve!
